A Neighborhood on Purpose

In our cohousing community members work together to create a socially rich community that is safe, sustainable, diverse, egalitarian, supportive, attractive and affordable.

Members collaborate to plan and develop their own neighborhood. Homes are owned privately but are deliberately clustered to provide a village-like common space that is protected from vehicle traffic. There is also a common house, which typically includes dining, recreation and childcare facilities and other amenities. In our community there is no effort to establish a religious or philosophical creed; what we share is a desire to live more economically, sustainably, and cooperatively.

Green Haven Workshop Pronounced Historic: The Beginning of Important Change for Cohousing Governance

UPDATE: Our Sociocracy workshop (aka Dynamic Governance) was a huge success. Fifty energetic adults and six kids attended, from as far away as Texas.About half the participants were Green Haven members and friends. We were joined by folks from five established Cohousing Communities and three other forming communities from all over New England, as well as a midwives group and other non-profits. A lot of learning, a lot of fun and GREAT food. Our team of presenters was excellent and varied, giving us a rich context in which to understand the concepts presented. Diana Leafe Christian kept us on our toes! Wonderful opportunities to learn from each other: We made friendships and alliances that will persist.

As someone from one of the established communities said at our closing, this appeared to be an historic event, a seminal occasion for cohousers, the beginning of a sea-change in how we approach self-governance.

Our thanks to Jack Nork from Green Haven and the Grove for putting this photomontage together. Enjoy.

An all-day follow-up workshop with Jerry Koch-Gonzalez is planned for March 11th. Although this workshop will be limited to Green Haven members and Friends who attended the January workshop, the focus of this follow-up session will include ways to roll out these concepts to other Green Haven friends.
